HC Deb 29 July 1909 vol 8 c1337
Mr. DILLON

asked whether a body of Indian troops has been sent to Shiraz; and, if so, at whose request and on what grounds?

Sir E. GREY

A detachment of 50 men has been sent for the protection of foreign lives and property at Shiraz, their security being seriously threatened by the advance of the Kashgai on that town, from which the tribal levies have already expelled the new Governor's representative. The step was taken on the recommendation of the Consul, and the Minister at Tehran fully concurs in its necessity. I trust the new Persian Governor will soon be able to get the situation in hand, and enable the detachment to be withdrawn.
