HC Deb 12 July 1909 vol 7 cc1644-5
Sir F. BANBURY

asked the President of the Board of Education whether his attention has been called to the action of the local education authority at Peterborough, who are proposing to provide a new school at the expense of the ratepayers when adequate accommodation has already been provided by the Great Northern Railway Company; and whether he proposes to take any action in the matter?

The PRESIDENT of the BOARD of EDUCATION (Mr. Runciman)

The local education authority have given notice of their intention to provide a new public elementary school. In the event of an appeal being made on the ground that the school is not required, it will be the duty of the Board of Education to determine as to its necessity in accordance with Section 9 of the Education Act, 1902. The existing school accommodation in the area would, of course, be taken into consideration.

Sir F. BANBURY

Am I to understand that the Board of Education will take steps to hold that inquiry, and will the right hon. Gentleman inform me whether a request for an inquiry will have to be made by the people interested if it is desired that such an inquiry should be held?

Mr. RUNCIMAN

An application will have to be made.
