HC Deb 05 July 1909 vol 7 cc783-4
Mr. ASHLEY

asked the Secretary of State for War what was the average strength of the Royal Garrison Artillery in Malta between 1st September, 1907, and 30th April, 1909; and how many suicides and attempted suicides took place in that force during that period?

The FINANCIAL SECRETARY to the WAR OFFICE (Mr. F. D. Acland)

The average strength during the period stated was 1,533, and the number of suicides was three. Of attempted suicides only one case is recorded.

Mr. ASHLEY

Will the hon. Gentleman inquire why there is such a considerable number of suicides there, and also as to the causes?

Mr. ACLAND

These men are dead, and it is therefore very difficult to find out the causes.

Mr. ASHLEY

Are no inquests held?
