HC Deb 11 August 1909 vol 9 c384
Mr. MIDDLEMORE

asked how many slips at the Royal dockyards at Pembroke, Devonport, Portsmouth, and Chatham were adapted for the construction of battleships of an improved "Dreadnought" type?

Mr. McKENNA

Three, namely, one each at Chatham, Portsmouth, and Devon-port. There are also in addition four slips which are capable of being modified to take these vessels if required.

Mr. MIDDLEMORE

How long will the modification take?

Mr. McKENNA

Not long.

Mr. JENKINS

Is it the intention of the Government to build at Chatham?

Mr. McKENNA

I have nothing to say on that point.

Mr. W. THORNE

How many private firms have slips capable of constructing "Dreadnoughts"?

Mr. McKENNA

If the hon. Member will give notice of the question I will inquire.
