HC Deb 11 August 1909 vol 9 cc392-3
Mr. REES

asked the Under-Secretary of State for India whether he is aware that the Government of Madras proposes to reopen the question of the transfer of the headquarters of the Godavari district from the flourishing port of Coconada to the inland town of Rajalmundrij; that the Government of India has decided that Coconada should continue to be the headquarters; that objections existed on the part of the mercantile community and other townsmen to the proposed change; that in most respects Coconada is the more suitable capital; and whether the Secretary of State will inquire, into the matter?

The MASTER of ELIBANK

The Secretary of State is not aware that the "Government of Madras proposes to reopen the question. They were against the transfer when the question was raised some years ago, and the Government of India and the Secretary of State took the same view.

Mr. REES

May I nevertheless ask that the hon. Gentleman will inquire. I have received information that the matter is being re-opened?

The MASTER of ELIBANK

Yes, I will make inquiries.
