HC Deb 04 August 1909 vol 8 c1843
Mr. HUGH BARRIE

asked the Vice-President of the Department of Agriculture (Ireland), what sum has been expended at Athenry, county Galway, in connection with the proposal to establish an agricultural college there; and what are the local difficulties which have caused the project to be abandoned?

The VICE-PRESIDENT Of the DEPARTMENT Of AGRICULTURE (Mr. T. W. Russell)

The expenditure in connection with the proposed agricultural college at Athenry was in respect of the preparation of the plans. A sum of £370 10s. 3d. was so expended. The difficulties had reference to agrarian and labour troubles.

Captain CRAIG

Will the right hon. Gentleman have any objection, seeing that there is so much agrarian trouble about Athenry, to building this college in one of the law-abiding counties?

Mr. T. W. RUSSELL

County Antrim is now making arrangements for the establishment of a college in that county, and that will perhaps suit county Down.

Captain CRAIG

Does that come out of the agricultural fund?

Mr. T. W. RUSSELL

Yes.
