§ Major ANSTRUTHER-GRAYasked the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs whether he could make any further statement with regard to the present state of Turkish affairs in Europe and in Asia; and whether British life and property were adequately safeguarded?
§ Sir E. GREYI am still unable to say what is likely to happen in Turkey, but it is satisfactory to note that foreigners were efficiently protected during the recent fighting in Constantinople. With regard to the provinces, the situation still shows signs of unrest, but it is to be hoped that the authority which has gained full control in Constantinople may have a pacifying influence elsewhere. The disposition of His Majesty's ships in Turkish waters is, in the main, as described in my answer to the hon. Member's question of the 22nd instant. His Majesty's ship "Triumph" has proceeded from Alexandretta to Antioch Bay, to be as near as possible to Antioch, where disturbances have occurred.
§ Major ANSTRUTHER-GRAYHas the right hon. Gentleman any information as to the deposition of the Sultan, reported in the evening papers?
§ Sir E. GREYNo, Sir; I have not.
