HC Deb 07 April 1909 vol 3 c1147
Sir GEORGE SCOTT ROBERTSON

asked the President of the Board of Trade if he has any official knowledge that Regulation 9 of the Weights and Measures Regulations, 1907, has in some cases not been complied with; if he can give the reasons for such non-compliance; and if he will call for a report on the working of regulation 9 from all the authorities concerned and lay it upon the Table of the House.

The PARLIAMENTARY SECRETARY to the BOARD of TRADE (Mr. Tennant)

I am aware that in some districts a difficulty has been experienced by the local authorities in complying with the requirement of the Regulation that the premises of every trader in the district shall be visited by an inspector of weights and measures at least once a year, and in many districts the Board of Trade have, as provided in the Regulation, sanctioned an extension of this period to two years with respect to the whole or part of the district as to certain trades. With these extensions the Board of Trade have no reason to believe that there are many cases in which the Regulation is not now complied with, though there may be a few country districts where full compliance is still difficult and some relaxation of the Regulation may yet be found necessary. I doubt whether a Return, as suggested, would serve any useful purpose at the present time.
