HC Deb 01 April 1909 vol 3 cc480-1
Sir HENRY COTTON

asked the Under-Secretary of State for India whether, in the case of the individuals arrested and deported under the Madras Regulation II. of 1819 by the agent to the Governor at Vizagapatam, any provision was made for the maintenance of these individuals and their families according to their rank in life, and to their own wants and those of their families, as directed by the Regulation?

Mr. BUCHANAN

I must refer the hon. Member to the answer that I have just given. The Secretary of State has no reason to suppose that, if any such arrests have been made, the Government of Madras have not duly taken the action prescribed by the Regulation as regards the persons concerned and their families.

Sir HENRY COTTON

Is the right hon. Gentleman aware that the Government of Madras have refused to pay?

Mr. BUCHANAN

No, Sir; the only case we know anything about at the India Office is that referred to in the last question, and I have said we will make inquiry as to the other one.
