HC Deb 01 April 1909 vol 3 c491
Captain KINCAID-SMITH

asked the Secretary of State for War whether the regulations have been cancelled under which cavalry officers with 10 years' service were permitted to retire on temporary retired pay of £100 a year for 10 years if joining the Yeomanry; and, if so, whether they will be permitted to join the supernumerary list of some Regular cavalry regiment at Home and do the annual training, as the Special Reserve are required to do?

The SECRETARY of STATE for WAR (Mr. Haldane)

The regulation in question was amended by Army Order 61 of last March. Service in the Territorial Yeomanry no longer qualifies an officer to draw temporary retired pay. The question of allowing him to qualify by service on the supplementary list is under consideration.

Major RENTON

Are the services of these trained officers entirely lost to the country?

Mr. HALDANE

No, Sir; they are not lost, because they are in the reserve of officers.

Captain KINCAID-SMITH

Is the decision likely to be given soon?

Mr. HALDANE

You cannot decide these things without a certain amount of consideration.

Major RENTON

Do officers of two years' service go automatically to the reserve?

Mr. HALDANE

No; the officers who retire and receive retired pay are ipso facto under an obligation to serve in the reserve of officers.
