HC Deb 01 April 1909 vol 3 cc481-2
Mr. JOYNSON HICKS

asked the Under-Secretary of State for India whether he was aware that there are several schools in India belonging to the Baptist Missionary Society which receive Government grants; and whether the Baptist Missionary Society holds complete control of such schools, or whether there is any representation of tax or ratepayers on the managing committees?

Mr. BUCHANAN

Mission schools, including those of the Baptist Missionary Society, are, like other schools, eligible for Government aid if they give secular instruction conforming to the departmental regulations. It is not customary for representatives of the taxpayers to be included in the managing committees of such schools.

Mr. JOYNSON-HICKS

May I ask whether there is any public control over these schools?

Mr. BUCHANAN

The hon. Member will find all information on this subject in the Quinquennial Report on Indian Education.
