HC Deb 01 April 1909 vol 3 c474
Mr. GINNELL

asked the Chief Secretary t D the Lord Lieutenant of Ireland whether his attention had been directed to the facts now disclosed that the present decrease in the number of young people emigrating out of Ireland was most marked in the counties in which cattle had been driven off ranches and the land distributed among the people, and that the districts in which this operation had been completed had at once become peaceful; and, seeing that this process could be promoted without legislation, whether he would endeavour to have it accelerated wherever in Ireland there was a ranch and people in need of land?

Mr. BIRRELL

I am not aware that the facts are as stated by the hon. Member. I have always been anxious that the acquisition of untenanted land for the relief of congestion should be accelerated, but the driving of cattle does not aid, but, on the contrary, hampers and embarrasses those engaged in purchasing and redistributing such land.
