HC Deb 27 October 1908 vol 195 c44
MR. LEVY LEVER (Essex, Harwich)

To ask the hon. Member for South Somerset, as representing the President of the Board of Agriculture, whether his attention has been drawn to the case of George Barton, of Tendring, Essex, who is required to give up possession of his cottage after a tenancy of fifteen years, although he is unable to obtain another suitable dwelling in the neighbourhood; and whether the Housing Bill will make provision for such cases so as to enable the labourers to remain in the villages.

(Answered by Mr. John Burns.) My hon. friend has asked me to reply to this Question. My attention has not been drawn to the case referred to, but as regards the last part of the Question I hope and believe, as I have said before, that the result of the Bill will be that cottages will be provided by local authorities where they are required, and that, consequently, in any such case as that mentioned the tenant will be able to obtain another suitable dwelling in the locality.
