HC Deb 26 October 1908 vol 194 cc1577-8
MR. MORTON (Sutherland)

To ask the Secretary for Scotland whether he will arrange for a grant of money to the county council of Sutherland for the purpose of improving the 660 miles of main roads in that county, an expense which it is impossible for the overburdened ratepayers to meet out of the local rates; and whether he is aware that the main cause of this expense is the motor traffic.

(Answered by Mr. Sinclair.) I regret I cannot hold out any prospect of a grant for the purpose referred to, but my hon. friend is aware that the increased expense of road maintenance alleged to be due to motor car traffic is receiving the attention of the Government.
