HC Deb 22 October 1908 vol 194 cc1329-30
MR. COURTHOPE

To ask the Secretary of State for War whether experiments have been conducted with a view to so altering the breech mechanism, magazine, and chamber of the service Lee-Enfield rifle that up-to-date ammunition with a powerful charge of fast-burning powder and a pointed ogival bullet may be used, in order that British troops may be armed with a rifle and ammunition not inferior to that of other nations; and, if not, whether he will give instructions for such experiments to be carried out forthwith.

(Answered by Mr. Secretary Haldane.) As I have already explained to the House, experiments are now being made with the view of obtaining ammunition of the kind indicated in the Question.
