HC Deb 20 October 1908 vol 194 cc949-50
MR. FETHERSTONHAUGH (Fermanagh, N.)

I beg to ask the Chief Secretary to the Lord-Lieutenant of Ireland whether any steps are to be taken during the present session to improve the pay and position of the Royal Irish Constabulary.

THE CHIEF SECRETARY FOR IRELAND (Mr. BIRRELL,) Bristol, N.

I am anxious to proceed with the Constabulary (Ireland) Bill as soon as possible, and will take advantage of the first opportunity that may arise. The hon. and learned Member is probably aware that the financial Resolution, which is a necessary preliminary to the introduction of the Bill, is at present before the House, and that the Committee on the subject has been deferred until Monday next.

MR. MOORE (Armagh, N.)

Will the Bill include provision for the improvement of the position of the officers as well as of the men?

MR. BIRRELL

I would sooner not answer that Question, as it would involve entering into particulars.
