HC Deb 15 October 1908 vol 194 cc490-1
MR. MACKARNESS

I beg to ask the Prime Minister whether, in view of the feeling which has been evoked in all parts of the country by the injury and danger to life and property caused by the abuses of the motor traffic and the failure of the existing law to deal with those abuses, His Majesty's Government will take steps to amend the Motor Cat Act of 1903.

MR. ASQUITH

There can be no doubt that considerable feeling has been aroused in many places by the inconsiderate driving of motor cars, and representations have been made to the Local Government Board on the subject. On 19th September last, the Board issued a circular to local authorities drawing attention to the provisions of the Act of 1903, and impressed upon the authorities the importance of the enforcement of the law. I hope that the effect of this circular may be to bring about a more systematic enforcement of the law, but my hon. friend may be sure that the matter will not be lost sight of.

MR. CATHCART WASON (Orkney and Shetland)

asked if steps could not be taken to prevent these abuses by persons in high places who continually set the law at defiance?

*MR. SPEAKER

Notice should be given of that Question.
