KAVANAGHI beg to ask the Chief Secretary to the Lord-Lieutenant of Ireland whether he is aware that paupers can be deported from Great Britain to Ireland on magistrates' warrants, to be supported and maintained by Irish ratepayers; whether he is aware that such a case has recently occurred in Carlow, where a pauper has been sent from England to the Carlow workhouse, giving his birthplace as Leighlinbridge, whereas no one of the name has ever been known in the locality; and whether 1102 he will instruct magistrates in this country to make more investigation before issuing a warrant for deportation.
§ MR. BIRRELLMy attention has been called to the case referred to. As I have stated on previous occasions the question of amending the law regarding the removal of paupers will be considered when legislation is being introduced for the reform of the Poor Law. I have no power to give instructions to magistrates in England or Scotland.
