HC Deb 23 November 1908 vol 196 c1770
MR. PIKE PEASE (Darlington)

I beg to ask the Secretary of State for War whether the engagement of men of the Special Reserve to come out for twenty-one days training is not in itself a guarantee according to law that they will receive twenty-one days pay whether they are asked to serve for the whole period or not; and, if so, whether he will give instructions for the men of the 3rd battalion Suffolk Regiment, who received twenty days pay only, to be given the remaining day's pay now owing them, especially as the whole sum involved in this and all other cases is trifling.

MR. HALDANE

The reply to the first part of the Question is in the negative. As I informed the hon. Member, I am considering whether in future it will not be possible to arrange that the full twenty-one days training, and consequent pay, shall be given.

MR. PIKE PEASE

Is not the War Office bound to pay for twenty-one days, seeing that the men are engaged for that period?

MR. HALDANE

They are not engaged for twenty-one days.
