§ MR. BOWERMAN (Deptford)On behalf of the hon. Member for South West Ham, I beg to ask the First Lord of the Admiralty whether he is aware that a number of sailors were sent ashore recently at Portland to do labourers' work on the naval recreation ground, which has usually been done by ordinary general labourers; and, in consequence of hundreds of men being out of employment there, whether he is prepared to stop such work being done by sailors.
§ MR. MCKENNAThe recreation ground has been largely made by the employment of fleet labour over a long period, and no sufficient provision has been made in the Estimates to permit of the work being done otherwise. It is not proposed to make any change in the practice in such cases.
