Member for South Somerset, as representing the President of the Board of Agriculture, whether, having regard to the work that is being done by the Land Club Union in certain districts of Surrey and Kent in making inquiries as to the demand for land and in organising co-operation among the applicants, he will ask for the consent of the Treasury to make a grant to the union under Section 49 of the Small Holdings and Allotments Act, in order to enable it to extend its work.

§ (Answered by Sir Edward Strachey.) The power of making grants to societies of a local character is given to the county councils by subsection 2 of the section referred to, and the Board are therefore not prepared at present to adopt the suggestion of my hon. friend.
