HC Deb 26 May 1908 vol 189 c927
MR. W. T. WILSON

To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department whether his attention has been called to a case tried before the County Justices at Bolton, on the 18th instant, when a small shopkeeper was prosecuted for selling adulterated butter, and fined £20 and costs; whether he is aware that the prosecuting solicitor stated that the Bench had not to deal with a small shopkeeper but with people of substance in Ireland; and whether he will institute proceedings against those people who are placing on the market, as pure butter, margarine which, on analysis, was proved to contain 9½ per cent. of water and 80 per cent. of fats other than butter.

(Answered by Sir Edward Strachey.) My right hon. friend has asked me to reply to this Question. Our attention has been drawn to the case to which my hon. friend refers, and in view of the statement of the solicitor for the prosecution we are making further inquiry into the matter.
