HC Deb 25 May 1908 vol 189 c758
MR. SWIFT MACNEILL

I beg to ask the Secretary of State for War whether his attention has been directed to the case of an ex-soldier who, having served through the South African War with the Scots Fusiliers and gained the Victoria Cross at Colenso, for going to the assistance of an officer at the imminent risk of his own life, has been charged at Ashton with refusing to perform his task whilst an inmate of the workhouse, to which he was admitted, with his wife and three children, being unable to work owing to varicose veins; and whether, having regard to the fact that this man's pension amounts to £10 per annum only, and that he and his wife and three children are now paupers in a workhouse, it is contemplated to take any, and, if so, what, steps for his relief.

MR. HALDANE

The hon. and learned Member presumably refers to the case of George Ravenhill, V.C. This case is still-under investigation.
