HC Deb 20 May 1908 vol 189 c302
MR. SHEEHAN (Cork County, Mid.)

I beg to ask the Chief Secretary to the Lord-Lieutenant of Ireland whether he has received any representations to the effect that private students from provincial schools and colleges should be admitted to the various examinations and degrees under the contemplated Irish University, as well as to participate in the honours, prizes, exhibitions, scholarships, etc., of such University; and will he state whether effect will be given to these needs in his University scheme.

MR. BIRRELL

I have received certain representations which go to show that there are still some people in Ireland who are satisfied with the Royal University system, that is to say, the system of a mere examining body as distinguished from a teaching University. I am convinced, however, that the view in question is not generally held in Ireland.
