I beg to ask the First Lord of the Admiralty whether he will state how many lieutenants and supplementary lieutenants of the Royal Navy were on half-pay on 1st May, 1908; and how many of these were unavailable through illness.

Lieutenants, R.N. (entered as cadets):—

On half-pay for private affairs, or waiting appointment; for long or short periods 64
Sick and on half-pay 18
Total 82

Lieutenants, R.N. (supplementary list):—

On half-pay, at own request in every case 6
Sick and on half-pay
Total 6
Grand Total (both lists) 88

There are in addition eight lieutenants at present on full pay sick leave.
