HC Deb 19 May 1908 vol 189 c83
MR. HAZLETON

I beg to ask the Chief Secretary to the Lord Lieutenant of Ireland whether it is proposed to appoint this year a temporary assistant engineering inspector under the Local Government Board at a salary of £300; whether this is a new office; and, if so, on what grounds it is considered necessary.

MR. BIRRELL

The post to which the Question refers is that of temporary assistant engineering inspector (architect), for which provision is made in the current Estimates for the first time. The appointment was made last year after the Estimates for that year had been settled. The creation of this temporary post was absolutely necessary in view of the great increase of work thrown on the engineering staff in the examination of the plans and specifications for labourers cottages under the new Act.

MR. HAZLETON

How many temporary positions are there under the Local Government Board?

MR. BIRRELL

A good many. I should have to inquire to say exactly.
