HC Deb 11 May 1908 vol 188 c713
*MAJOR RENTON (Lincolnshire, Gainsborough)

I beg to ask the Secretary of State for War at what date the cavalry stables at Bulford will be completed.

MR. HALDANE

My hon. and gallant friend evidently refers to the cavalry barracks now building at Tidworth. Eight blocks should be ready for occupation on 2nd June, and the other six blocks on 30th June.

EARL WINTERTON

Did not the right hon. Gentleman, in the course of debate, promise that these stables should be completed before this?

MR. HALDANE

I said so, subject to certain contingencies. I have good hopes they will be finished by the time I have now stated.

MR. PIRIE

Where are the Scots Greys quartered?

MR. ASHLEY

Are not the horses a long way from the men?

MR. HALDANE

They are quite near enough.

MR. ARNOLD-FORSTER

Is it not a fact that a great many of the horses are in one place and the men in another?

MR. HALDANE

They have been kept as close together as possible having regard to human contingencies.

MR. PIRIE

Would it not be more advantageous to military interests to have the men and horses at the same place?

MR. HALDANE'S

reply was inaudible.

*MAJOR RENTON

Is the right hon. Gentleman aware there were two inches of snow in the stables of the Scots Greys last month?

MR. HALDANE

It may have been so.
