HC Deb 05 May 1908 vol 188 cc32-3
MR. MULDOON (Wicklow, E.)

To ask the Postmaster-General whether any negotiations are going on between him and the Canadian-Pacific Railway Company for the carriage of mails to Canada and Hong Kong; is he aware that the Canadian-Pacific Railway runs through American territory, and cannot therefore be called all-British; is he aware that the Grand Trunk Pacific Railway, which runs altogether through British territory and carries the great bulk of the traffic, will in a short time have a port, viz., Prince Rupert, on the Pacific Coast, which is 500 miles nearer to Hong Kong than the Pacific terminus of the Canadian Pacific; and would he defer entering into any arrangement with the Canadian Pacific until the Grand Trunk, which is an up-to-date line, faster, and cheaper, will be in a position to tender for the contract.

(Answered by Mr. Sydney Buxton.) I would refer the hon. Member to the reply which I gave yesterday to the hon. Member for South Belfast.
