HC Deb 31 March 1908 vol 187 c316
DR. HAZEL (West Bromwich)

I beg to ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department, whether he will direct a formal investigation to be made of the fire which occurred at the Hamstead Colliery, South Staffordshire, on the 4th March, by which over twenty lives were lost, and of the causes and circumstances of the accident, including the condition of the mine at the time of the accident.

MR. GLADSTONE

Yes, Sir. I have already made arrangements for this purpose. The investigation will be held by Professor Redmayne, of Birmingham University.

DR. HAZEL

Can the right hon. Gentleman say when the investigation will take place?

MR. GLADSTONE

The preliminary steps will be taken this week.
