HC Deb 30 March 1908 vol 187 cc93-4
COLONEL WARDE (Kent, Medway)

I beg to ask the President of the Board of Education whether, under the terms of the proposed Education Bill, if a non-provided school is transferred to the local authority and religious instruction is demanded in accordance with the London County Council syllabus, it will be competent for teachers to claim that, inasmuch as there are to be no tests for teachers, they cannot be compelled to give the necessary instruction.

THE PRESIDENT OF THE BOARD OF EDUCATION (Mr. MCKENNA,) Monmouthshire, N.

Yes, Sir. Under Clause 1, Sub-clause (1), of the Bill no teacher may be required, as a condition of his employment, to give any religious instruction.
