HC Deb 26 March 1908 vol 186 cc1565-6
MR. ASHLEY

I beg to ask the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs what steps have been taken by the Egyptian Government to secure the safe return to the coast of the large body of Egyptian subjects who have undertaken the pilgrimage to Mecca.

SIR EDWARD GREY

The measures taken by the Egyptian Government for the protection of Egyptian pilgrims to Mecca were revised in 1906. The honourable Member will find details on the subject in Lord Cromer's last we published Annual Reports (Egypt No. 1 [1906] page 66, and Egypt No. 1 [1907] page 78). His Majesty's Chargé d'Affaires at Constantinople has reported that, in consequence of a recent attack on the caravan by Arabs, the Grand Vizier has instructed the Vali of the Hedjaz and Kiazim Pasha, who is in charge of the Hedjaz Railway Works, to take the necessary steps to ensure the safe return of the pilgrims.
