HC Deb 24 March 1908 vol 186 cc1230-1
MR. BYLES (Salford, N.)

I beg to ask Mr. Chancellor of the Exchequer whether his attention has been drawn to the estimate of co-operative societies of this country that the sugar tax has cost their customers, who are almost exclusively of the working class, no less a sum than £4,426,937 in the last seven years: and whether, in his forthcoming Budget, he will give full consideration to this burden on the poorer taxpayers of the country.

MR. ASQUITH

I have received representations from the Parliamentary Committee of the Co-operative Congress to the effect stated. My hon. friend may be sure that no aspect of the matter will fail to receive most careful consideration.
