HC Deb 23 March 1908 vol 186 cc1054-5
MR. GULLAND (Dumfries Burghs)

To ask the Lord Advocate whether he is a ware of the feeling in Scotland among men liable to be summoned as jurymen against so large a number as thirty-six being called to appear, at inconvenience and expense, when only twelve are required, and when the cases are often of the most trivial nature; and whether in his proposed legislation he will include provisions to remedy this grievance, and so reduce the prevailing discontent wit the jury system.

(Answered by Mr. Thomas Shaw.) I am not aware that there is any "prevailing discontent with the jury system," or that there is any foundation for this suggestion. One or two details, such, as those referred to in the Question do seem to require improvement. If it is found, for instance, that a full panel could be selected from a smaller number of jurymen summoned that point would be worthy of consideration with a view to a remedy, and I shall look into the matter in that spirit.
