HC Deb 18 March 1908 vol 186 c578
MR. VINCENT KENNEDY () Cavan, W.

I beg to ask the Chief Secretary to the Lord-Lieutenant of Ireland if he will state how many magistrates have been appointed in East and West Cavan, respectively, on the recommendation of His Majesty's present Lieutenant of the county; is he aware that some of the appointments are contrary to the wishes of the people; and will he make representations to the Lieutenant of the county, with a view to having appointments made which would secure, as far as possible, that the majority of the people have at any rate an equal representation on the bench with the minority.

MR. BIRRELL

The Lord Chancellor informs me that the numbers of magistrates who have been appointed in East and West Cavan upon the recommendation of the present Lieutenant of the county are five and six, respectively, and of the eleven so appointed eight are Roman Catholics and three are Protestants. The Lord Chancellor has no reason to believe that any of the appointments are unpopular, and he does not think it necessary to make any representations on the subject to His Majesty's Lieutenant.
