To ask the President of the Board of Education what are the latest figures of the yearly cost per child in elementary schools for England and Wales, excluding London, and for London only.

(Answered by Mr. McKenna.) The latest figures available in respect of expenditure by local education authorities on elementary education are for the financial year ended 31st March, 1906. The total average cost per child in average attendance for that year was in England and Wales (excluding London) £3 9s. 3d., and in London £5 15s. 6d.
