HC Deb 02 March 1908 vol 185 c325
MR. DUFFY

To ask the Chief Secretary to the Lord Lieutenant of Ireland whether the police authorities are erecting a canteen and supply store at Newford, near Athenry; whether the police could procure everything they wanted in Athenry; and will he explain the purpose of burdening the rates with this expense.

(Answered, by Mr. Birrell.) A canteen and general supply store for the constabulary will shortly be opened at this place. The police could doubtless procure supplies in Athenry, but in the Inspector General's opinion it will be an advantage to the large extra force in the district to obtain their supplies at their own store. This arrangement will impose no burden upon local rates. The charge for the extra police is at a fixed rate.
