HC Deb 25 June 1908 vol 191 c101
CAPTAIN CRAIG

I beg to ask the Chief Secretary to the Lord-Lieutenant of Ireland whether the recent action of the Lords Justices in proclaiming two more counties in Ireland was approved by the Lord-Lieutenant; and, if so, can he state the reasons for taking this step.

MR. BIRRELL

The Lords Justices have full power to act during the absence of the Lord-Lieutenant, and therefore, the first part of the Question does not arise. The proclamations were issued with the object of appointing additional police, because the counties were in a state of disturbance arising mainly from cattle-driving.
