HC Deb 25 June 1908 vol 191 cc72-3
MR. CLAUDE HAY (Shoreditch, Hoxton)

I beg to ask the First Lord of the Admiralty whether he will state approximately the value of Government property and premises destroyed or damaged by fire during the last two years.

THE FIRST LORD OF THE ADMIRALTY (Mr. McKENNA,) Monmouthshire, N.

As I have stated, the Admiralty do not insure their property against fire, and therefore there are no statistics very readily available to enable me to assist the hon. Member; but I have looked through the reports of the cases of fire that have occurred at Admiralty establishments in the United Kingdom during the last two years, and I think I can safely say that the amount of damage does not exceed £10,000.

MR. CLAUDE HAY

How many fires would be involved in that loss of £10,000?

MR. McKENNA

Not many, but I cannot charge my memory with the exact number.

MR. CROOKS (Woolwich)

Any galley fires among them?
