§ MR. E. H. LAMB (Rochester)To ask the First Lord of the Admiralty whether the Civil Service examination for entry on to the permanent staff of writers was found to be unsatisfactory, and, if so, in what respects; and whether, since its abolition, an equal number of candidates of equal merit have been forthcoming.
(Answered by Mr. McKenna.) The Civil Service examination for the entry of copyists was not found to be unsatisfactory, but since its abolition the Admiralty have had no difficulty in obtaining as many men of this class as required, and their merits have been quite equal to those of the copyists entered by the Civil Service Commission.
