HC Deb 01 June 1908 vol 189 c1549
* MR. ASHLEY

I beg to ask the Secretary of State for War whether, in view of his decision that men over thirty-six years of age are not suitable for active service abroad, orders have been given that the 10,000 non-commissioned officers and men over that age on the regimental strength of the several arms at home, in the Colonies, and in India, shall be discharged from the Army.

MR. HALDANE

No, Sir.

* MR. ASHLEY

asked why the right hon. Gentleman refused to allow men over thirty-six to go into the Special Reserve when 10,000 over that age are to continue to serve in the Army?

MR. HALDANE'S

reply was understood to be to the effect that while it might not be desirable to have men over that age liable to active service abroad it would be a very different thing to say that the whole Army should be under thirty-six.
