HC Deb 31 July 1908 vol 193 cc1948-9
MR. BARRIE (Londonderry, N.)

To ask the Secretary to the Treasury whether the omission of the words, "for the year ending 31st March, 1908," in the revised Supplementary Estimate of £114,000 for bonuses and capitation grants for Irish teachers, passed under Closure on the 28th instant (No. 255), and which were inserted in the Supplementary Estimate of 22nd June (No. 186), will prevent these allowances being paid immediately for the year ending 31st March last, in fulfilment of promises previously made.

(Answered by Mr. Birrell.) I understand that the increased allowances are to be paid in respect of the financial year ended 31st March last, but of course it is not intended that Parliament shall provide more than one year's grant in any given financial year.
