HC Deb 31 July 1908 vol 193 cc1953-4
MR. LEIF JONES (Westmoreland, Appleby)

To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department whether he will state the total annual cost of the reformatories and industrial schools of England and Wales; and what proportion is borne by national and local funds.

(Answered by Mr. Secretary Gladstone.) The total cost for the year 1907 was £428,888. The Treasury contributed 42 per cent, and the local rates nearly 42 per cent., the rest coming from subscriptions and profit from labour. Taken separately, the Treasury contributed 56 per cent, and the rates 26 per cent, in the case of reformatories; while for industrial schools the proportions are: Treasury, 37 per cent.; rates, 47 per cent.
