To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department how many day industrial schools there are in England, and what is the number of scholars, male and female, in average attendance at them and whether any practical difficulties have been found in carrying out the system of religious instruction in those schools, and, if so, what are those difficulties.

(Answered by Mr. Secretary Gladstone.) There are fifteen day industrial schools in England. The average attendance in 1707 was 1,257 boys and 694 girls. No difficulties have been experienced in carrying out the system of religious instruction.
