HC Deb 29 July 1908 vol 193 cc1468-9
MR. WATT

To ask Mr. Chancellor of the Exchequer, what were the duties paid on spirits (not wine or beer) per head of the population of England, Scotland, and Ireland, respectively, for the year 1907–8.

(Answered by Mr. Lloyd-George.) The net duties on spirits collected for the year 1907–8 in England, Scotland, and Ireland, respectively, were as follows—

£
England 9,959,743
Scotland 7,486,642
Ireland 4,392,432

Calculated upon this basis, the payment per head of the population would be for—

£ s. d.
England 0 5 8
Scotland 1 11 4
Ireland 1 0 1
But no safe conclusion can be drawn from these figures, as the place of payment of duty by no means necessarily corresponds to the place where the spirits are consumed.
