HC Deb 29 July 1908 vol 193 c1474
MR. J. DEVLIN

To ask the Chief Secretary to the Lord-Lieutenant of Ireland whether, in the distribution of the grant to national teachers in Ireland, he will make provision for increases to the workhouse teachers in Irish unions, as such teachers are under the national board rules and their salaries are paid by Government grants, and as in many cases there never has been any improvement in their positions in the way of salaries.

(Answered by Mr. Birrell.) The reply is in the negative. No charge in respect of the salaries of teachers of Poor Law union schools has ever been borne on the Vote for public education. Such teachers are in the service of the boards of guardians, and are paid out of the local rates.
