HC Deb 25 July 1908 vol 193 cc610-1
MR. JOHN REDMOND (Waterford)

To ask the President of the Board of Trade whether he will consider the advisability of appointing a representative of Ireland on the Departmental Committee he proposes to appoint to inquire into the question of the alleged control by certain trusts of the meat trade; and whether any question will be referred to such Committee affecting the importation of Canadian cattle.

(Answered by Mr. Churchill.) I am reluctant to add to the numbers of the Committee by the appointment of representatives of special interests or views. It is a Departmental Committee. Its reference is strictly limited to the specific financial and economic aspects of the question, and it does not extend to recommendations affecting the conditions of the importation of cattle. If in these circumstances my hon. and learned friend still presses for the appointment of an Irish representative perhaps he will communicate with me again.
