HC Deb 23 July 1908 vol 193 c299
MR. REES (Montgomery Boroughs)

To ask the Under-Secretary of State for India whether the Lieutenant Governor of Bengal received a communication signed by the Nawab of Murshedabad, the Maharajas of Kasimbazar, Burdwan, and Gidhour, and Maharaja Prodyot Kumar, Tajore, deploring the anarchism brought to light in their province of Bengal, and urging that seditious writing poisons the mind of the young and led to the conspiracy recently discovered at Calcutta, and that the Government of India should bring in Press legislation which will deal efficaciously with the present unbridled licence to slander by irresponsible press men and root anarchism out of India; and whether the Governments of India and Bengal propose to take any action upon this representation.

(Answered by Mr. Buchanan). The letter referred to in the Question has been published in the Indian newspapers, and has, no doubt, been considered by the Government of India. The Secretary of State has nothing to add to his recent utterances on the subject of seditious writing in India.
