HC Deb 21 July 1908 vol 192 cc1733-4
MR. O'SHAUGHNESSY

I beg to ask the Chief Secretary to the Lord-Lieutenant of Ireland whether he is aware that the auditor at the last audit of the accounts of the Newcastle West union appointed eight o'clock in the morning for his audit and was finished by mid-day; and whether he will issue instructions to the auditor to fix an hour more convenient to district councillors having to come a long distance.

MR. BIRRELL

The auditor appointed eight o'clock in the morning for opening the audit, that being the hour at which he arrived by train from Tralee. The next train does not arrive till two o'clock in the afternoon. The auditor did not leave till 3.30 p.m. on the same day, so that any persons who desired to attend had ample opportunity of appearing before him. The auditor has a good deal of preliminary routine work to do before he is in a position to receive and consider objections. The guardians have raised no objection to the commencement of the audit at such an early hour, but if they should do so the auditor would doubtless meet their convenience.
