SUMMERBELLI beg to ask the First Commissioner of Works if he could state whether any extra pay is allowed the workmen employed, either by day or contract work, while employed painting and cleaning the dangerous parts of the palm house or pagoda in the Royal Gardens at Kew; and, if so, how much.
MR. HARCOURTThe reply to the first paragraph is in the negative. The contractors, however, pay a heavy premium upon the insurance of workmen engaged on this work, amounting to 40s. per cent., which is considerably above the ordinary rate.
