HC Deb 14 July 1908 vol 192 cc612-3
MR. COCHRANE (Ayrshire, N.)

I beg to ask the Secretary to the Treasury whether the Government intend to make any grant to Scotland equivalent to the £6,000 to be granted to aid tobacco-growing in Ireland.

MR. HOBHOUSE

I have consulted my right hon. friend the Chancellor of the Exchequer who wishes me to say that when a case can be made out in Scotland, as in Ireland, for encouragement to experiments in tobacco-growing the Government will be prepared to give it the same favourable consideration.

MR. COCHRANE

Is the hon. Gentleman aware that experiments have shown that tobacco can be successfully grown in Scotland?

MR. HOBHOUSE

I am afraid I can add nothing to the Answer.
